Jan-Jan Van Essche adjustable strap bag that is hand-dyed using natural indigo.

Focus on: The dyeing process. In true artisanal fashion, each piece has been garment dyed by hand using natural indigo. In the atelier, Jan-Jan Van Essche and his team spent a lot of time experimenting with various fabrics and how they react to the natural dye. Chosen here was a linen-cotton with a twill weave. The result is a lighter coloration that retains a striking vibrancy and subtle variation throughout. Will age beautifully and develop further character with wear.

*Kesa is a rectangular garment traditionally worn by Buddhist monks and priests in Japan. As a reminder of Buddha’s own simple patched garment, Kesa are formed from many pieces of the same cloth. Within each garment, the rectangular pieces are typically organized in a series of columns framed by a border with mitered corners. It is this idea of precise panelling and overlapping edges that Jan-Jan used as inspiration.

Fit: The adjustable strap (adjustable via two buttons and button-holes found along the entire length of the strap) allows the bag to be carried by hand as a tote, on the shoulder, or across the body.
