Jan-Jan Van Essche (Belgium)

Jan-Jan Van Essche is a menswear designer from Antwerp, Belgium. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 2003, winning several grand prizes including the prestigious Dries Van Noten award. Jan-Jan’s work blends western and ethnic fashion traditions through the use of fluid silhouettes and loose forms. Unlike most designers, he designs one full collection a year that is then complemented by seasonal projects in the form of individual capsule collections. He proposes annual wardrobes to be worn throughout the year by layering up and down, encouraging universal freedom to the wearer of his garments.

For Project #4, titled Each One Teach One, Jan-Jan Van Essche contemplates reconstruction and renewal as a creative (and spiritual) process. He celebrates the past while continuing to move forward. A major influence is Boro, a traditional Japanese technique of embroidery patchwork repair, which the designer has re-interpreted into his own vision.
